DISASTER RELIEF

Topical Storm Erika 2015

On Thursday August 27th, 2015 Dominica was severely affected by Tropical Storm Erika.  Erika was particularly destructive because it was not predicted to cross paths with Dominica which left many residents unprepared for its wrath. The devastation caused by tropical storm Erika left Dominica in need of immediate help. The Dominica Houston Association initiated a disaster relief fund as was able to ship two 20 foot containers of supplies to people in need.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Dominica Houston Association Scholarship Fund was founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from college, the Dominica Houston Association Scholarship plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved youth and young adults. The Dominica Houston Association Scholarship provides individual grants, paid directly to the educational institution, to selected students. Medical Assistance 2017

Dominican native Gertrude Florent desperately needed help to transport her mother from Dominica to a neighboring island’s hospital in order to receive necessary medical care. On May 5, 2017, the Dominica Houston Association presented Gertrude with a check for $1860.00 to assist her ailing mother with urgently needed medical care. The funds were collected via an online fundraising campaign and a DHA contribution.

DHA CULTURAL AFFAIRS

Dominica is known for its extensively celebrated creole heritage. Its series of activities hosted during the independence season represent its commitment to culture as well as sustenance of the African traditions that were left behind by our ancestors. The DHA Cultural Dancers are based in Houston , Texas and specialize in the traditional dance arts from Dominica. They aim to inform others about the history, the traditional outfits, and music. The cultural coordinator Nickel LeBlanc thought it was important for young people to learn their culture in a fun way and also provide a method for them to express themselves through the arts. Participants are taught the theory of the dance, which include traditional music, timing and history of our culture. Currently the group is made up of a variety of generations of Dominicans born both locally and abroad.
